Landlord Engagement Network for Eviction Prevention: Making Repayment Agreements
Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Ontario government passed Bill 184, the Protecting Tenants and Strengthening Community Housing Act, 2020, which included changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, and the eviction process at the Landlord Tenant Board. Bill 184 also established new procedures for the creation of repayment plans to address arrears of rent payments for tenants.
Since passing the Bill, there has been moratoriums on evictions and ongoing financial challenges due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic that have left many community members with growing arrears, served L1 or L9 notices, and continued uncertainty about how they can make arrangements to repay them while keeping their housing.
Join us as we invite Bhavin Bilimoria, a staff lawyer with Don Valley Community Services, to support our understanding of the legalities of repayment agreements, how to negotiate with landlords about arrears repayments, and what we need to know about repayment agreements and the law.
OVERVIEW/OUTCOMES:
This workshop will help tenants, and housing professionals, and landlords to answer:
- What are repayment agreements? What can they include?
- How can repayment agreements be used to prevent an eviction?
- What happens if a repayment agreement is breached?
